Cowboys Might Lose Huge Protective Piece In Free Organization
The Dallas Cowboys should probably be prepared to lose a significant portion of their defense to free agency this offseason.
Sports Illustrated’s Mike Dabate believes the Cowboys will let cornerback Stephon Gilmore walk this spring due to the precarious salary cap situation.
“Dallas enters the new league year with the goal of making room in the major leagues,” Dabate wrote.
“And then you could try to allocate that money to bigger necessities.

Given the rise of the [Daron] brand and his much more encouraging cap number of $1.
06 million, you could also try to allocate that money to bigger necessities.
” It may ultimately be too expensive to keep him on the Cowboys roster until 2020.
” It’s important to consider that Dallas will have superstar cornerback Trevon Diggs in front of them next season.
He will be recovering from a torn cruciate ligament.
So with Brand’s emergence and Diggs’ return, the anticipated loss of Gilmore may not be as painful as one might think.
That doesn’t take away from what Gilmore accomplished with the Cowboys this year.
The veteran played in all 17 regular season games, recording 68 tackles, two interceptions, one forced fumble and 13 passes defended.
Although he is no longer a former All-Pro, he still showed enough talent that Dallas’ pass defense finished fifth in the NFL.
The Cowboys acquired Gilmore in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts last March.
Gilmore spent the first five years of his career with the Buffalo Bills, making one Pro Bowl before spending four years with the New England Patriots.
During that time, he appeared in the Pro Bowl three times and was named first-team All-Pro four times.
He also helped the Patriots win the Super Bowl in the 2018-19 season.
The 33-year-old then spent one year with the Carolina Panthers and one season with the Colts before settling down in Dallas.
