It appears like the Cowboys already have a strategy in place for creating salary cap room.

NFL: Dallas Cowboys at San Francisco 49ers

As the Dallas Cowboys’ second week of the offseason draws to a close, contract chatter is a common topic of conversation. Topics of conversation this hour revolve around Dak Prescott’s contract dilemma. In an effort to relieve the salary cap, numerous articles have already been written by beat writers explaining why the Cowboys do not need to extend Dak Prescott this offseason (our own Brandon Loree covered the notion here). If they feel like it, they are free to reorganise him.

Whether it’s a restructure or an extension, the Cowboys will eventually have to make a decision regarding Dak Prescott’s contract. It won’t be overly dramatic, but the decision they make will have a big impact on the offseason as a whole. However, there are other places the Cowboys can find money.

The Cowboys seem to have an initial path for money outlined

ESPN’s Todd Archer also discussed the Dak Prescott situation and provided an astute explanation of the options he knows the Cowboys are facing.
Rebuild or expand.
Doing nothing is not an option.
However, when discussing the topic, Archer went into a little more detail about the Cowboys’ finances, specifically noting that they already have plans to restructure the contracts of both players Zach Martin and Trevon Diggs.
.
The Cowboys already have plans to restructure the contracts of All-Pro guard Zach Martin and cornerback Trevon Diggs, who is recovering from a torn ACL, which would free up about $20 million in cap space.
may be obtained.
They could also restructure the contract of right tackle Terrence Steele.
They can designate wide receiver Michael Gallup as a cut after June 1 and receive $9.
5 million, but they won’t be able to add that slot until June.
The All-Pro receiver’s contract extension with CeeDee Lamb would actually reduce his $17.
99 million cap hit, making him the highest-paid receiver in the game.
The cap is not a myth, but there are ways to get around it and push the dollar forward into the future.
We all know that the DAK decision is very important, but explaining it in detail is just as important.
Dallas is currently nearly $20 million in the red against the over-the-cap salary cap, so any type of flexibility would be welcome.
Martin and Diggs’ reforms appear to be putting Dallas back to square one, so to speak.
Nothing is set in stone, but Archer is incredibly reliable and financially savvy and appears able to bet on everything, including Steele’s restructuring and Michael Gallup’s departure.
To be fair, these aren’t radical ideas, but they seem like the first path Dallas could take to create cap space.
As he also pointed out, the team could generate another $18 million or so in space-related space if they decide to regroup with Dak Prescott.
What will the Cowboys do with this?
Conventional wisdom says there’s nothing particularly interesting or brilliant about it, but modern logic says their job is to give it their all for the 2024 season.
(please excuse the dramatic expression).
Maybe they’re seriously thinking about it now.
The map is just beginning to appear, but it remains to be seen what specific direction the Cowboys will ultimately take.
