Former Panthers OC Thomas Brown joining Chicago Bears as pass game coordinator

Former Panthers offensive coordinator Thomas Brown is joining the Chicago Bears as pass game coordinator.

Thomas Brown, the former Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator, will join the Chicago Bears as their passing game coach, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

Brown, 37, will report to head coach Matt Eberflus and be reunited with offensive coordinator Shane Waldron, whom he previously worked with in Los Angeles as an assistant on the Rams’ coaching staff. Brown only spent the 2023 season in Carolina, directing plays for the Panthers after the team parted ties with head coach Frank Reich. Carolina ranked worst in yards per game (265.3) and points per game (13.9).

He spent three years with Rams coach Sean McVay before joining the Panthers. Brown played college football at Georgia, Chattanooga, Marshall, Wisconsin, Miami, and South Carolina before joining the NFL.

Bears add Thomas Brown to new-look coaching staff

He appears to have a great chance of reviving his career following a poor stint in Carolina, with Chicago owning the first choice in the 2024 NFL Draft. The Bears will have to make a decision in the coming months, as USC quarterback Caleb Williams now holds the title of best player available on the board.

However, with Justin Fields still on the roster and coming off his greatest season as a passer to date, the Bears seem unlikely to select Williams first overall. Perhaps the Bears will put the pick on the market for the second straight year and stick with Fields for a fourth season. Whatever the case, Brown, along with Waldron, will help shape Chicago’s new passing game.
