According to reports, the Bears have hired a former Tennessee Titans offensive line coach.
The Tennessee Titans’ tight ends coach post has resulted in some important advancements in recent years.
Arthur Smith, the Atlanta Falcons’ head coach, formerly held the position with Tennessee from 2016 to 2018 before being moved to offensive coordinator in 2019. After Smith left for Atlanta, Todd Downing was promoted from tight ends coach to offensive coordinator in 2021.
This time, the Titans’ former tight ends coach isn’t getting the same level of promotion as the previous two.
Luke Steckel, who initially accepted a post as the Titans’ run-game analyst after Tony Dews was named the new tight ends coach, has elected to join the Chicago Bears’ offensive line staff, according to Sam Phalen of AtoZ Sports Nashville.
According to Chris Emma of 670 The Score, Steckel will become an assistant offensive line coach.
Steckel had been with the Titans since the 2013 season, quietly advancing up the coaching levels. He was also interviewed for the Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive coordinator position this offseason.
Last season, Steckel’s tight ends accounted for approximately 30% of the Titans’ receptions, with 64% of those receptions (54-of-85) going for first downs. He also helped develop potential young tight end Chigoziem Okonkwo.
The run-game analyst position was created this offseason, so it will be fascinating to see how Mike Vrabel replaces it on his staff moving forward.
