Justin Fields' days with the Chicago Bears appear to be numbered

Chicago Bears boost interest in quarterback sensation Caleb Williams ahead of NFL Draft.

The Chicago Bears are set to choose Caleb Williams with the first overall choice in the NFL Draft, and the team’s new offensive coordinator is on board with the decision.

According to details from interviews for the position of offensive coordinator, the Chicago Bears are targeting Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall choice in the NFL Draft.

Following a 7-10 season, the Bears retained head coach Matt Eberflus, but fired his support staff, including offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. This action indicated the team’s draft plans, implying that third-year quarterback Justin Fields could be replaced with a draft pick.

Shane Waldron, former offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, has taken over Getsy’s position. As draft day in Detroit approaches, it appears that Fields will be replaced by the Bears, who plan to use their first-round pick on USC standout and former Heisman Trophy winner Williams.

Chicago is picking first in the draft as a result of last year’s trade with the Carolina Panthers, in which the Bears gave up the No. 1 pick, which was used to choose Bryce Young. Following a terrible 2-15 season for the Panthers, the Bears now hold the first overall pick.

According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the draft was a major issue in discussions with candidates for the Bears’ new offensive coordinator, with interviews focusing on the idea of working with Williams. He states that ‘one of the things that thrilled’ the applicants was the opportunity to collaborate with the rising celebrity.

Breer, a seasoned NFL analyst, believes it’s a wise decision for the Bears. He said, “It’s not like Justin Fields is a bust. Furthermore, this (Williams) is a very rare chance with a very uniquely gifted guy, and you’ll get that player at a fraction of the cost of keeping Justin for the next three or four years.”

The Bears have dropped their biggest hint yet that they will draft Caleb Williams No. 1 overall in April

Caleb Williams is widely regarded as the best quarterback prospect in his draft class, although Drake Maye and Jayden Daniels are also considered potential first-round picks. The youthful star finished his collegiate football career with 93 touchdown passes and only 13 interceptions, cementing his place as one of the league’s most promising newcomers in years.

While he may not be an immediate upgrade over Fields, who has had some promising moments despite injuries in his three NFL seasons, the economics make sense. Fields’ rookie deal is almost up, and maintaining him could cost far more than drafting a new quarterback.

Bears legend Brian Urlacher believes the team’s decision is obvious. He commented: “I believe they must take Caleb. This year, I don’t see a way around it.

“If you don’t choose him and he turns out to be fantastic, yet having said that, Justin Fields has performed well this season. This was also true last year. It’s tough. The defence played well in the second half of the season… but I believe if Caleb is available, you must take him.”
