Warriors’ Joe Lacob breaks silence on Steve Kerr’s deal.
The Warriors have revealed Steve Kerr’s hefty contract extension.
The Golden State Warriors and head coach Steve Kerr agreed on a two-year, $35 million contract deal at the conclusion of last week. The franchise announced on Tuesday that Kerr has signed a contract with the organization through the 2025-26 season.
Before Tuesday’s game against the Washington Wizards, Kerr had coached the Warriors to a 502-265 record since joining the team in 2014. He has guided them to four NBA championships and six Western Conference titles. For Warriors owner Joe Lacob, extending Kerr on a new contract was a no-brainer.
“We’re thrilled that Coach Kerr will continue to lead our team in the coming years thanks to this well-deserved contract extension,” Lacob stated in a team press statement. “Steve has played an enormous role in our success over the last decade, which has been replicated by very few coaches in NBA history. His history as a player and coach is impressive, but not surprising given his exceptional management abilities and personal ethics, which are on full display every day. Simply put, he is the person you want leading your club, and his championship background is incredible.”
Kerr, the 2015-16 NBA Coach of the Year, has guided the Warriors to five of their six most successful seasons in franchise history. This includes eras when they were known as both the Philadelphia Warriors and the San Francisco Warriors. During the NBA’s 75th anniversary season, Kerr was named one of the top 15 coaches in league history.
Although he felt happy guiding the team on an expiring deal, Kerr always wanted to stay with the Warriors and never considered coaching another team.
“I’m thrilled to continue the partnership that I’ve enjoyed with this fantastic franchise for the past ten years,” Kerr stated in the announcement. “I’d like to thank everyone who has put their trust in me to coach our club, especially Joe Lacob, Peter Guber, and the entire ownership group. I would like to express my gratitude to the Warriors’ coaching staff and players for their contributions over the previous decade. I am looking forward to working with the squad and the entire organization as we confront the great challenges of this season and beyond.”
The Warriors are currently 29-27 during the season. If the Warriors make the playoffs, Kerr will be in his sixth season leading them there.
