Matt Eberflus Drops Huge Hint on Chicago Bears’ QB Plan Amid Rampage Justin Fields’ Exit Rumors
Will Justin Fields be back as the Chicago Bears’ starting quarterback next season?
Right now, all indications point to the Bears using their first-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft to sign a new cornerstone quarterback to replace Fields. However, speculations have circulated that Chicago might cash in on that pick by bringing Fields back for at least another year.
Chicago Bears Coach Matt Eberflus Speaks Out on QB Search
Matt Eberflus, the Bears’ head coach, hasn’t made a decision yet – or so he says. However, the tenured coach is certain about the qualities he will look for in his quarterback when Chicago makes a major decision this summer:
“I look at situations,” Eberflus told Michael David Smith of PFT. “I seek for players who can handle third-down, two-minute, and end-of-game circumstances. That, to me, constitutes a divider. Then you look at hardiness. Toughness for a quarterback is mostly concerned with the mental toughness required to stand in the pocket and deliver the ball, as well as the discernment required to move out of the pocket and create when necessary. They come in many different forms and sizes. But it’s always enjoyable to analyze those guys.”
Does this sound like Justin Fields? I am not really sure.
Eberflus is not closing any doors. According to the 53-year-old, it is still possible that Fields will return to the Bears in 2024.
If Justin returns, we’ll have a plan in place, and if we need a new quarterback, we’ll have a plan in place,” Eberflus said.
That isn’t very encouraging for Fields. Caleb Williams is looking increasingly likely to be Chicago’s starting quarterback when the new season begins.
