Ilya Samsonov is making a strong case to be considered for this season’s Masterton Trophy.

Ilya Samsonov’s 2023-24 season has been a whirlwind, from first-half disappointment to second-half glory.

Incredibly, it’s only been 70 days since the Leafs’ divisive decision to place the 27-year-old Russian goaltender on waivers. It was also the proper decision. From the season opening against Montreal to the end of December, he couldn’t stop a beach ball.

In fact, when Samsonov was demoted to the AHL, he went 5-2-6 with a career-low save % (.862) and goals-against average (3.94). The writing was on the wall.

The 2015 Washington Capitals first-round pick is a different man, and more crucially for the Maple Leafs franchise, he is a different goalie. In 15 games since being brought up from the AHL on January 10th, the pending unrestricted free agent has a 12-3-0 record. In addition, he has a 2.37 goals-against average,.911 save percentage, and one shutout to his credit.

With 18 games remaining in the regular season, there is a solid case for Samsonov, who appeared to be dead to rights just a few months ago, to start Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Masterton Trophy has joined the conversation.

Whatever way you look at it, Samsonov’s ability to defy the odds and return to respectability displays determination. Mental health is serious business, and he was able to persevere during the darkest period of his NHL career thanks to the support of those around him.

The narrative writes itself.

At the very least, there is no doubt that he should be considered for this coveted honor. On an annual basis, there are numerous players that are and have been deserving of the award. This year is no different. Since 1967, the Bill Masterton Trophy Memorial Trophy has been presented yearly to the NHL player who most exhibits perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to the game.

Whether or whether he is nominated for the prize, Ilya Samsonov deserves a lot of credit for turning things around this season.

It’s a great story that deserves to be acknowledged.
